This only affects spells and abilities that tell you a player to "choose N" from a bulleted list. This does *not* include anchor words such as Moonlight Sanctum that ask you to choose a word.

If you choose an additional mode for a spell with escalate, you will still have to pay the escalate cost for it. This is because escalate is a cost that is paid for each mode chosen beyond the first, it does not care what allows you to choose the extra modes.

Nexus of Possibilities will allow choosing extra modes with the upgrade keyword, but not the align keyword.
2018-09-03
Nexus's additional mode is subject to the same restrictions as the other choices, such as choosing at random, or choosing modes that haven't been chosen. You will decide if you are choosing an additional mode or not before choosing modes at random. You can't choose the same mode multiple times unless the modal spell or ability allows it.

Some modal effects are mutually exclusive to each other. If chosen, these abilities will execute to the best of their ability still. If the mutually exclusive effect is the base power and/or toughness of a creature, the base power and/or toughness of the final mode will take precedence.

***Example*** If Outlaws' Merriment triggers, and two of its modes are chosen at random, a creature token will be created that is red and white, has all chosen abilities and creature types, and with the power and toughness of the last printed mode of the chosen modes.
